Hear from Ray Karadayi, president & CEO of Applied Automation Technologies, as he digs deeper into the topic of smart machining with machine metrology feedback.
The primary goal of any factory is manufacturing dimensionally accurate parts at minimum costs. Dimensional measurement methods are used throughout the factory to achieve quality control. Many of the methods used are not always efficient as they are dependent on human factors and isolation from one another.
Creating high accuracy metrology data directly on the machine tool can overcome many of these manufacturing issues. By using the multiple datum definitions intended by the design, performing advanced geometrical and dimensioning calculations within the manufacturing cycle eliminates the dependency on external measuring devices. The metrology data calculated can be automatically converted into the machine tool parameters that provides a feedback loop to automatically self-adapt and correct the manufacturing process. Cutting programs can be automatically created or modified to match the exact part shape and locations for the multi-axis cutting motion which can eliminate expensive and lengthy part setups.
This closed loop process assures to always produce a part that is within the desired tolerances and can be adapted to machine tools on the shop floor. This presentation discusses many examples of how this technology is used in aerospace, automotive, and other high precision part manufacturing. Examples are presented from actual cases, using contact and non-contact measuring sensors, for a variety of different machine tool configurations.
