Learn about CAPPS-NC CNC Probing Demo that took place at Makino Open House 2025 in Auburn Hills, MI. Explore how on-machine metrology advancements and process optimization is changing precision manufacturing.
AUBURN HILLS, MI – August 18, 2025 – Applied Automation Technologies showcased its products and services at a Makino Open House in August earlier this year. Specifically, AAT3D demonstrated CAPPS-NC CNC on-machine probing solution, which enables automated part alignment, adaptive machining, and post-production CMM style reporting. Held from August 13th to 14th at the Makino Technology Center, the event provided a place for AAT3D to show how advanced metrology software is transforming manufacturing precision. This is critical for parts with extremely tight tolerances and vital for demanding industries, such as Die & Mold and Medical sectors.
Attendees witnessed a state-of-the-art Makino V33i 3-axis vertical machining center with seamless integration of CAPPS-NC On-Machine Metrology software. Demonstrations focused on a critical component: a plastic injection mold to make anesthesia surgical masks.
"The Makino Open House is an ideal venue to highlight how CAPPS-NC empowers manufacturers," stated Chris Affer, Applications Engineering Manager. "We're not just measuring; we're providing actionable insight directly on the machine in cycle. CAPPS-NC allows for real-time adjustments, reduces setup times, eliminates costly scrap, and ensures parts meet the most rigorous specifications – a non-negotiable in industries like medical and mold & die."
During the live demonstration, the Renishaw OMP600 probe measured critical features of the complex mold. CAPPS-NC analyzed the gathered data and then generated a CMM-style report to display features and tolerances detailing the workpiece's quality. The Makino V33i, renowned for its rigidity and performance, seamlessly integrates with CAPPS-NC and enables probing accuracy comparable to a CMM. The correlation between the measurements taken on the CNC machine compared to the same measurements taken on the CMM station in the quality lab showed deviations that were slim-to-none.
AAT3D's CAPPS-NC CNC Probing solution continues to set the standard for on-machine metrology, transforming CNC machines into CMMs. This demonstration at the Makino Open House 2025 showcased the growing demand for smart factory automation in modern manufacturing.
